JUNE 3rd!!!! Send A Kid To Sea!!!! (Sunday Fund-Days @ Lucky Star!) JUNE 3rd!!!

This coming Memorial Day weekend, Lucky Star Market will be closed in honor of the proprietress’ completion of another year on the planet! This means that our next big push to Send A Kid To Sea will be SUNDAY, JUNE 3rd!!! Come on out and support an incredible effort for an incredible journey for one local student! (Below are some previously published links and details)! Also, every day, there are ways to support her progress, so stop by and inquire!

Ever had a really big dream? A really, really big one that could change your life in incredible ways? One of our Northside neighborhood students, currently a sophomore at Chapel Hill High School, has been accepted into the Canadian tall ship program, Class Afloat, for the 2012-2013 school year! If all goes well, she’ll be sailing out of Istanbul, Turkey in September to kick off her junior year of high school aboard the Sorlandet, a 200ft. Norwegian tall ship built in 1927. She’ll learn square-sail sailing, celestial navigation, endless types of knots, sea(woman)ship, and be engaged in several multicultural immersion and volunteer service projects, while also being challenged by an intensive academic school year! With over 20 port calls along the way, she will sail the Mediterranean to Greece, Croatia and France, then on to Portugal, Morocco and Senegal before crossing the Atlantic to Brazil! Later stops include tiny islands in the South Atlantic, South Africa, Namibia, the Caribbean and eventually a finish of the school year in southeastern Canada! She is in the process of raising tuition funds, through a combination of grant and scholarship applications, sales of Windmill Hill Farms honey (where she worked with bees all last summer and this past Spring Break for tuition), and Sunday Fund-Days here at Lucky Star Market! Also, ALL tips every day here at Lucky Star go directly towards tuition! It’s a tall order, but there are a lot of people pulling for her to get on that tall ship and go!

Help get this girl…

Cyclists’ Handbook

20120502-095727.jpg

“Just Ride” is a collection of essays from Grant Petersen of Rivendell Bicycle Works that is over-flowing with cycling wisdom.

Petersen’s core belief is that riding a bike is a simple pleasure that is quickly and easily overcomplicated by folks imposing unrealistic expectations on themselves. Why would someone spend hours tracking and analyzing their wattage when they could just be out riding their bike?

As a former racer, Petersen is not trying to discourage racers so much as he is trying to encourage the rest of us to find joy in cycling without feeling compelled to race (or equip ourselves like racers).

This book is a joy to read and it will surely make riding a bike more pleasurable, even for racers.
